Classics Symposium Keynote with Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Carl Phillips

In conjunction with the Classics symposium event, “A mouth full of stars: Audre Lorde, black feminisms and classics,” (link) Carl Phillips, a celebrated American poet and professor emeritus of English at Washington University in St. Louis, will deliver a poetry reading on Friday, October 16th at 4:30 p.m. in Hamilton Smith Hall 205. The event is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception. Phillips is a prolific American poet whose work frequently engages classical themes. He has published 17 books of poetry, including Double Shadow, winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Poetry, and Speak Low, which was a finalist for the National Book Award. His collection, Then The War: And Selected Poems, won the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Phillips has received numerous honors, including fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Library of Congress. He is the recipient of the Academy of American Poets Fellowship, an Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Academy of American Poets Prize, and a Pushcart Prize, and he has been inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
